Shape has a timely article on how to get your fitness back on track after the holiday binge.

Start Eating on Schedule
Each day, eat breakfast within an hour of waking up and eat again every 3 to 5 hours. Starting your day with a healthy meal and enjoying evenly spaced meals will maximize your metabolism, regulate your blood sugar and insulin levels, and level out your appetite. Unless you want to wind up thinner but flabbier, eating enough and at regular times is key.

Drink More H2O
Water does support optimal metabolism and some research shows it may naturally curb your appetite, but it can also help you feel better fast. Drinking more water flushes out excess sodium to help you quickly de-bloat, and it gets things moving in your digestive system to relieve constipation. Aim for 2 to 2.5 liters a day (about 8 to 10 cups).

Cut Back, but Don’t Cut Out Carbs
Nixing carbs completely can force your body to burn protein for fuel instead of using it to support and maintain your calorie-burning muscle. So instead of cutting carbs out, just cut back. Pair veggies and lean protein with a small amount of a healthy fat and a small serving of whole grains. We recommend aiming for 2 cups of veggies (about two baseball’s worth), 3 ounces (deck of cards) or a 1/2 cup (half a baseball) of a lean protein such as tofu, beans, fish or poultry, a 1/2 of a whole grain such as quinoa, barley or wild rice, and a little bit of healthy fat like extra-virgin olive oil, chopped avocado, or sliced almonds.

Life Thought For The Day:

How Temperatures Affect Calorie Burn Fitness

According to Fit’s It 360, don’t let the cold weather stop you. Although you may not feel like you did as much because your sweat output isn’t as high as it is in the summer time, you actually burned more calories.

Your body actually burns more calories trying to warm itself up than when it’s trying to cool itself down.

When you sweat, your blood vessels dilate in order to let the water in your blood rise to the surface of the skin. It will then evaporate and cause a cooling sensation, lowering the core temperature in your body. Just because you may be sweating doesn’t necessarily mean you’re burning calories. If the a/c is broken in your house in July and you’re sitting on your couch sweating like a pig, that’s not a calorie burn. If you’re sweating because your muscles are moving during exercise and are producing heat as a byproduct of energy production, then you’re sweating because of a calorie burn.

When you shiver, your body is trying to warm itself up by causing the muscles to contract at a super high rate in order to produce heat. Energy (in the form of calories) is used to make the muscles contract. When heat is produced through muscle contractions, then your body returns to its usual temperature. That is how you regulate temperature.

So the next time you want to complain about how cold it is, you should actually be thankful, you are burning more calories.

Yes this is the question I am asking you today, What makes you happy? I know what makes me happy, sunshine, smiles, my kids, my life and I make myself happy. It comes from within. You are your own destiny. No one else can make you happy but yourself.

I know this can be deep but you make your own self. You bring your thoughts to your mind. Yes there is a lot of outside influences, but you bring those on too. We all need to become a bit more mindful. Think before you say something, think before you think! We live in such a hurry that we forget to live purely. If you put out only negative thoughts only negative will come back. Who wants that? Not me! So the next week or so think what makes you happy. Bring positive thoughts to your mind. Stay in a good place in yourself and see what happens.

The New Year is right around the corner and so can the NEW YOU. Be more mindful and have more love an compassion for those around you. That would make me HAPPY!

SELF has an article on the 2012 Fitness trends to watch according to ACE, the American Council on Exercise.

They include:

1. Whole-Life Training: Being fit and healthy isn’t just about training the body. Expect to see a streamlined approach to health that incorporates the entire body including a nutritious diet and stress management.

2. Community Collaboration: Your new trainer might just be your mayor! ACE believes that local communities will continue to expand their health programs through activities and services just like this program in New Jersey high schools! Think your city is fit? See how it ranks next to other towns.

3. High-Tech Fitness: From video games to gadgets (and even SELF on your iPad) technology is the new aid in your journey to be fit. ACE expects 2012 to be the breakout year of fitness mobile-based apps, social media and online/remote fitness classes.

4. Workplace Support: Companies are realizing that employees who work out aren’t only healthier and happier, they’re also more productive (Bonus: get rid of your office butt) and while a declining economy has put pressure on what businesses can offer, ACE believes employers will outsource their wellness programs, partnering with local gyms to offer employee discounts and reduced membership fees.

5. Popular Workouts: The hottest fitness classes in 2012 will be ones that incorporate balance and core training like TRX Suspension Training as well as Zumba, boot camps and interval workouts.

I taught a Spa class at the local Comunity College this week for the new massage therapist. The instructor who was my Myology instructor for massage school 13 years ago asked me to come in and teach the class. “Of course I would!!” I love to teach! And to get my hands on new MT’s!! LOVE IT!!

So what to teach??? I have been thru it all. Do I tell them that being a MT is not as glamorus as everyone thinks? Do I tell them of all the gross things I have seen? Do I tell them all the celebrities I have touched?? No no Melissa think!!! So I did a little research on the web and everything came into place!

Lets talk spa history! Do you know how this Industry started? The PLAGUE and DISEASES beacuse nobody took a bath!! Taking a bath was for the lower society!! OMG I could not have done that. I get chills just thinking of it..EEWWW! Now I can talk about all the gross things I have seen, just kidding. Focus Melissa!!

Yes it has started way back in the Roman times when they figured out taking a bath actully is good for you and relaxing. Water has alot to do with this indusrty and we now call it Balenotherapy. The term “balneotherapy” is generally applied to everything relating to spa treatment, including the drinking of waters and the use of hot baths and natural vapor baths, as well as of the various kinds of mud and sand used for hot applications.

This is why we Spa Directors put funny things into your water like lemon, mint, cuccumbers and even oils. Because water is good for you!! Drink it! This is whay we come up with all these wacky treaments like having you soak in a hot bath for few minutes then a cold one then spray you down with a hot hose and then make you take a cold shower. Why? To torture you?? Kind of, no not really….beacuse it is good for your body!! You feel amazing and refreshed and reenergized! And we like to torture you..LOL.
